The City of Calgary is offering free educational programs to communities through the ReTree YYC Community Program. Westgate will be hosting 2 workshops in the coming weeks at the community centre. Registration can be done using our website (see programs tab). Please tell your neighbours!
April 11 7:30-8:30PM Pruning and Planting 101 (adults only)
Come hungry for knowledge about tree planting and pruning, and leave with a healthy appreciation for Calgary’s Urban Forest. This is a beginner to intermediate course, but also a great venue for community experts to help educate their neighbours and discuss community tree care. After this course you can feel confident planting and maintaining your trees. This course gives a healthy portion of demonstration leaving enough room for a tree fueled Q&A with a certified City of Calgary Urban Forestry Technician. Each participant will also receive a take-away with extra information and a surprise treat.
May 7 1:30-3:00PM Stretch Your Roots Walk (all ages)
The Stretch your Roots tree tour will guide you through Calgary’s tree history and the benefits of trees in Calgary’s urban forest. There will also be a tree ID and facts portion of the walk, where you will learn how to identify native and non-native trees along with learning interesting facts about their biology and life cycles. Stretch your Roots is a fun and interactive walk with tree bingo for the little munchkins, and a tree hugging exercise that gives you the opportunity to experience trees using all your senses.
