As part of the West LRT Project, traffic is shifting from the 17 Avenue S.W. detour road onto the new Sarcee Trail/17 Avenue S.W. interchange bridge on Friday, October 28, at 6 p.m. Please expect traffic delays over the weekend and use alternate routes whenever possible. The shift will be done in stages, which include two major traffic restrictions in place from Friday, October 28, at 6 p.m., until Saturday, October 29, at 11 p.m.:
- There will be no access from 17 Avenue S.W. to southbound Sarcee Trail. Motorists can use 37 Street S.W., 45 Street S.W., 69 Street S.W. and 85 Street S.W. for an alternate southbound route during this time.
- Eastbound 17 Avenue S.W. will be reduced to one lane between Sirocco Drive and 47 Street S.W.
Beginning on Sunday, October 30, motorists travelling from 17 Avenue S.W. to southbound Sarcee Trail must use the northbound Sarcee Trail on-ramp that will temporarily connect to southbound Sarcee Trail. This southbound Sarcee Trail connector will remain in place until the permanent southbound Sarcee Trail on-ramp is completed in 2012. As part of the interchange bridge opening, pedestrians will have access to a new sidewalk on the north side of 17 Avenue S.W., between 47 Street S.W. and Costello Boulevard. The south sidewalk is scheduled to open in 2012. Crews will complete the remaining interchange ramps and open the full Sarcee Trail/17 Avenue S.W. interchange in 2012, as originally scheduled. The new interchange bridge will provide commuters a much smoother ride through the winter months as its design will prevent seasonal pot holes caused by the freeze-thaw cycle during Calgary’s winter.
