1) Westgate Rink Project
Thanks to federal funding through "Canada 150," the Westgate rink is getting lift!
The rink was resurfaced with new asphalt this week and its looking pretty slick, just in time for the City of Calgary's Mobile Skate Park which will be located at the rink from 2-15 September. Still to come are fresh new “kicks” for the dasher boards and the asphalt will be painted white to help with winter ice maintenance.
Unfortunately, within the last week, some “haters” wrote obscenities and rude messages on the dasher boards in permanent yellow paint. Luckily we were able to remove it with chemical and elbow grease. If you have any information about this crime, please contact Calgary Crime Stoppers at calgarycrimestoppers.org.
2) Traffic Calming on 8th Avenue SW
Just in time for Back-to-School, 8th Avenue SW has fresh new sidewalks and curb extensions. Westgate was one of the lucky neighbourhoods selected by the City of Calgary for a "traffic calming" project due to high vehicle counts and speeds on 8th Avenue SW.
The purpose of the traffic calming is to reduce vehicle speeds, making travelling through the community, and to the schools, safer for pedestrians. The new sidewalks and curb extensions have been upgraded to include ramps, which will improve mobility for strollers and wheelchairs within the community.
We do expect that vehicle traffic will be slowed during peak drop-off and pick-up times at the schools, particularly during the first week back in September. Your patience is appreciated; thank you for supporting our students getting to and from school safely!
