Community Garden Workshop
Date: Thursday, February 22nd, 2018
Time: 7:00 – 9:00 pm (light supper provided at 6:30 pm)
Location: Tuxedo Park Community Association 202 29 Ave NE
Is your community association considering adding a community garden to its recreational amenities? What are some of the questions community volunteers and board members should consider? What can we learn from recent and past history of this fast-growing form of outdoor recreation? What are some of the best practices that might explain the growth of community gardens? What are some of the challenges and pitfalls? What are the essential steps in building a volunteer-based community garden to ensure that it runs smoothly and serves the community effectively?
Dr. Bert Einsiedel has been an active garden leader of three local community gardens: the Inglewood, U of C and, currently, the Varsity Community Garden. After retiring as a Professor of Extension at the University of Alberta, he trained to be a Master Composter and began volunteering as a member of the Core Committee of its Community Garden Resource Network (CGRN), then a special project of the Calgary Horticultural Society. CGRN and the City Parks Department, along with a number of churches and businesses, worked cooperatively in growing the community gardens in our city.
Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for you to share and discuss your garden and project ideas with Bert, City staff as well as fellow community volunteers and gardeners.
