You may have noticed Little Free Libraries around Westgate, there’s even one in front of the Westgate Community Association Hall! Traditionally they look like a small house on a post along the sidewalk in front of residences or businesses. Not sure what they’re all about? They’re essentially a free book exchange for readers of all ages. Some are registered through the official Little Free Library, while others fly under the radar – either way we’re delighted to have them in Westgate.

General best practices for Little Free Libraries

  • Anyone can take a book, anyone can leave a book!
  • If you take a book, you don’t need to return it to a little free library – but it is encouraged that you leave a book or two when you can to help keep the libraries stocked and the options fresh
  • Use your best judgement when leaving a book, items should be in good condition. Even books have expiration dates if you no longer want a book because it’s damaged or out of date it doesn’t belong in a little free library either.
  • Tidy up a library when you can. Sometimes items get left in a little library that belong elsewhere. If you see damaged materials, organic materials like twigs, or anything else out of place, you can remove it! Pitching in to tidy up helps keep the libraries in great shape.
  • If it’s full, try another library. Cramped little libraries lead to damaged books and can make it harder to find your next great read.
